Bridgeport, Alabama. Oct 2d 1863
Dear Wife
you will have herd before this reaches you that we had left virginia for some
other part of the world We left Alexandria last Saturday on the cars went
through Washington most to baltimore took the baltimore & Ohio R.R. to
Wheeling crossed the river into Ohio & went by the way of Columbus, Indianapolis
& Jefferson City. crossed the river to Louisville, K. Y. thence by the
way of Nashville, Murfresboro, Tullahoma to this Place which is in the north
east corner of Alabama on the Tennesee river some 35 or 40 miles below Chattanooga
to which place we shall have to go on foot as the railroad is running only
to this place we have been 6 days & nights on the cars only getting off
twice a day long enough to get something to eat it has hen a long & tiresome
journey, we arrived this forenoon weary and dusty & most of us have been
into the river and had a wash & feel much refreshed...
