![]() Captain Newel M. Cheney of Jamestown, NY - 9th NY Cavalry. Historian of the Regiment- A 9th NY Cavalry carbine is on display at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum. For many years, it was thought a Lakewood, NY man of the 9th NY Cavalry by the name of Cpl Alpheus Hodges, Company F fired the first shot in the Battle of Gettysburg. Today that distinction is somewhat in doubt. Captain Cheney writes "Training camp was on the former Chautauqua County Fairgrounds, now named "Camp Seward" in honor of President Lincoln's Secretary of State, William H. Seward. Seward was a former resident of Westfield when he was an agent for the Holland Land Company. He had also served as governor of New York and a United States Senator. " |
