November 6, 1860 Republican Abraham Lincoln is elected President of the United States, receiving 180 of 303 electoral votes and 40 percent of the popular vote.
December 20, 1860 South Carolina secedes from the Union. Followed within two months by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas.
February 16, 1861 Newly elected President Abraham Lincoln visits Westfield, NY and asks to meet with 12 year old Grace Bedell, who had written then candidate Lincoln and advised him that whiskers would improve his appearance. He shook her hand, gave her a kiss, and advised her that she "may have gotten a President elected."
March 4, 1861 Abraham Lincoln is sworn in as the 16th President of the United States.
April 12, 1861 Ft. Sumter is attacked. The Confederate Flag flies over the Fort April 14, 1861.

April 15, 1861 President Lincoln authorizes the first call for 75,000 men to serve 3 months, and asks for a special session of Congress to convene on July 4. Hardly had the "Three months men" reached the field before it was discovered that a mistake had been made in not calling out a larger number of troops, and for longer service as President Lincoln realized what a gigantic rebellion we had on our hands. So on the 3d of May President Lincoln issued a call for United States volunteers to serve three years, unless sooner discharged.
July 4, 1861 Congress authorizes a call for 500,000 men.
July 24, 1861

The 72nd New York Volunteer Infantry is mustered into service and assigned to Sickles' or Excelsior Brigade at Staten Island, NY. The companies were recruited principally: A and K in New York city; B at Jamestown; C in Vermont; D and E at Dunkirk; F at Newark, N. J.; G at Westfield; H at Dunkirk and New York city, and I at Delhi. Company L was recruited principally in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Delhi, Sinclairville and Plattsburg.

Colonel William O. Stevens - 72nd NewYork. Former Chautauqua County District Attorney, Dunkirk, NY. Offered command of 112th New York when organizing in Jamestown and refused, stating he belonged to the Regiment with which he was already linked. Killed May 3, 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville, VA .

August 14, 1861 Busti/Lakewood, NY born George Stoneman was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General of Volunteers, Chief of Cavalry on General McClellan's staff, Army of the Potomac.
September 2, 1861 The enlisting of the 100th New York Volunteer Infantry begins in Buffalo, NY. The companies were recruited principally : A at Buffalo, Franklinville, Springville and Ogdensburg; B at Attica, Batavia, Bergen, Caledonia, East Pembroke, Greenwood, Greigsville, Jamestown, Le Roy, Lodi, North Hector, Pearl Creek, Persia, Pavilion and Victor; C at Buffalo, Brighton, Pembroke, Rochester and White's Corners; D at Buffalo, Grand Island, La Salle, Tonawanda and Wheatfield; E at Buffalo, Brocton, Cattaraugus, Dunkirk, Mayville, Portland and Westfield; F, originally intended for the Astor Regiment, and G at Buffalo; H at Buffalo, Arkwright, Cherry Creek, Ellington, Hanover, Irving, Silver Creek, Smith's Mills and Villanova; and I and K at Buffalo.
 

Colonel James M. Brown - 72nd New York and 100th New York. Former Jamestown attorney who raised a company in Jamestown after President Lincoln's first call for men in May of 1861. This was Co. B in the 72nd NY (the famed Excelsior Brigade) where he was a Captain. Later in November 1861 he was commissioned a Colonel in the 100th NY and led them into their first fight at Fair Oaks, Virginia May 31, 1862. He was killed leading his men into that battle and his body was never recovered from the field. Camp James M. Brown in Jamestown is named for Colonel Brown.

September 18, 1861 The 49th New York Volunteer Infantry is mustered into service at Buffalo, NY. The companies were recruited principally: A, G, I and K in Chautauqua county; B. D, E and F in Erie county; C - Fremont Rifles - in Westchester county; and H in Niagara County.
September 28, 1861 Daniel Peck enlists in the Ninth New York Cavalry.

November 26, 1861 The 9th New York Cavalry left the State for Washington, D.C. The Regiment was known as the "The Westfield Cavalry". Captain Newel M. Cheney

Captain Newel M. Cheney of Jamestown, NY - 9th NY Cavalry. Historian of the Regiment- A 9th NY Cavalry carbine is on display at the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum. For many years, it was thought a Lakewood, NY man of the 9th NY Cavalry by the name of Cpl Alpheus Hodges, Company F fired the first shot in the Battle of Gettysburg. Today that distinction is somewhat in doubt.

Captain Cheney writes "Training camp was on the former Chautauqua County Fairgrounds, now named "Camp Seward" in honor of President Lincoln's Secretary of State, William H. Seward. Seward was a former resident of Westfield when he was an agent for the Holland Land Company. He had also served as governor of New York and a United States Senator. "

In the second year of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln issued the following letter to the Governors of the 17 states that were still in the Union. The quota of men who were to be supplied from each state was actually listed separately in a document issued by the War Department on July 7, 1862.

To the Governors of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Michigan, Tennessee, Missouri, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin, and the President of the Military Board of Kentucky:
Gentlemen: Fully concurring in the wisdom of the views expressed to me in so patriotic a manner by you in the communication of the 28th day of June, I have decided to call into the service an additional force of 300,000 men. I suggest and recommend that the troops should be chiefly of infantry. The quota of your State would be ______. I trust that they may be enrolled without delay, so as to bring this unnecessary and injurious civil war to a speedy and satisfactory conclusion. An order fixing the quotas of the respective States will be issued by the War Department tomorrow.

July 7, 1862 New York Governor Edwin D. Morgan asked men of the State to form units in the field at the earliest possible moment.
Through July and August Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties were abuzz with Patriotic fervor. War meetings were held in towns and villages and bounties paid to the men who joined the newly forming Regiments.
August 12, 1862 The 9th NY Cavalry is engaged near Cedar Mountain, Va.
August 14, 1862 The Military Committee resolved to raise two new Regiments, the 112th New York (The Chautauqua Regiment) and the 154th New York(The {2nd } Cattaraugus Regiment). The Colonel chosen to be the Commanding Officer of the 112th New York was a former Baptist Minister who served the ministry in Panama and Westfield, NY. Captain Drake resigned his commission as a Captain in the 49th New York, and was commissioned Colonel Jeremiah C. Drake, 112th New York Volunteer Infantry. The companies were recruited principally: A at Ellicott, Carroll, Poland and Gerry; B at Pomfret, Stockton, Charlotte and Gerry; C at Hanover, Villanova, Cherry Creek and Arkwright; D at Harmony, Mina, French Creek, Clymer, Busti and Kiantone; E at Westfield, Ripley, Chautauqua, Sherman and Ellery; F at Ellicott, Harmony and Gerry; G at Dunkirk, Portland and Sheridan; H at Chautauqua; I at Pomfret and Stockton; and K at Hanover, Villanova and Cherry Creek.

The 154th New York was to be led by Colonel Addison G. Rice of Ellicottville. He agreed to lead the Regiment to the seat of the war, and at that point the Regiment was to be turned over to Colonel Patrick Jones of the 37th New York. Colonel Jones had studied Law with Colonel Rice in Ellicottville and had military experience. (continued): The companies were recruited principally: A at Ellicottville, Carlton, Cold Spring, Humphrey, Randolph, Great Valley, Carrolton, Little Valley, Conewango, South Valley, Salamanca and Napoli; B at New Albion, Otto, Dayton, Perrysburg, Leon, Mansfield and Persia; C at Portville, Hinsdale, Ischua, Allegany, Humphrey and Olean; D at Machias, Yorkshire, Freedom, Franklinville, Ashford and Lyndon; E at Portland, West-field, Ripley and Chautauqua; F at Charlotte, Arkwright, Gerry, French Creek and Freedom; G at Ashford, Ellicottville, East Otto, Allegany, Mansfield, Olean, Jamestown and Hillsdale; H at Randolph, Napoli, Salamanca, Little Valley, Great Valley, Jamestown, Carrolton, South Valley, Cold Spring and Farmington; I at Olean, Hinsdale, Salamanca, Allegany, Great Valley, Humphrey, New Albion, Portville, Machias and Yorkshire; and K at Conewango, Perrysburg, Dayton, Persia, Leon and New Albion.

Mustered into the service along with the two infantry regiments was a company of sharpshooters, designated the 7th Company New York Sharpshooters led by Captain Joseph S. Arnold of Ellicott, 1st Lieutenant W.C.J. Hall of Jamestown and 2nd Lieutenant J. Clinton Perry of Carroll. The company was composed of men recruited from Ellicott, Kiantone, Busti, Ellington, Ellery and Carroll.

June 1865 The war was over and the local Regiments had completed their history, the men made their way back to New York State by rail, steamer and some walked. But home they were, always to remember their fellow soldiers they left behind. Chaplin Hyde briefly states, "Hundreds of homes in old Chautauqua were illumined with joy, a joy such as can only be experienced when the patriot soldier returns from his toils, perils and privations, bringing with his glad presence the assurance of his country's safety, honor and perpetuity." And from an earlier letter, the same writer states, "And while we feel deep sadness as we think of the so many of the bravest and best who have fallen or maimed for life by wounds yet cannot help reflecting with honest pride, upon their courage and patriotism, which led them to give even life for their country."
